For a while, I was running Ubuntu Server instead of Gentoo on my home file server because I had some trouble figuring out how to get Greyhole running on it.
(Background: Greyhole is a redundant-storage subsystem that sits on top of Samba. Basically, it allows you to combine multiple disks (not necessarily all the same size) into one pool of storage space. If you have files you really don’t want to lose (like your wedding photos…but you should have backups!), you can tell it to maintain copies of those files on more than one drive…think of it as selective redundancy. It’s been compared to the Drive Extender feature that used to be in Windows Home Server, but I don’t think Drive Extender provided redundant storage.)
Anyway, a desire to get my home server running Gentoo again prodded another attempt at getting Greyhole working on it. A couple of weeks or so ago, I figured it out…but it was a manual process, and since it requires a loadable module to be built within the Samba source tree, it wasn’t going to be easily maintainable.
The solution to this? Write an ebuild. The peculiarities of getting Greyhole up and running made this a bit more tricky than usual, but I’ve done it:

This is part of my Portage overlay, which has a bunch of other ebuilds I’ve found useful over the years. Installing Greyhole on Gentoo is now as simple as this:
One caveat: the Greyhole ebuild will currently only with with Samba 3.x. The build process for Samba 4.x is a little bit different, and since I don’t have a Gentoo box running Samba 4 (it’s keyworded ~arch at this time), I don’t have a way to verify that it’ll work. There are three FIXMEs that would need to be replaced to use Greyhole with Samba 4.x.)

Following up on Science of Us’ recent illuminating interview with a woman who was engaged in a sexual relationship with her father, Jezebel on Tuesday published a gut-wrenching and thought-provoking essay from yet another victim of genetic sexual attraction (GSA). This time, it’s not a happy love story: in her remembrances of her experience with GSA, Vancouver-based writer Natasha Rose Chenier describes the psychological whirlwind of falling in romantic love with her biological father, whom she did not meet for the first time until she was 19.
Over a two-year period after they first met, Chenier explains, her father seduced her — but she also experienced a phenomenon that is estimated to affect at least half of relatives who meet as adults (though the figure is disputed).
Just when you think they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel of depravity, they drill right through and find something else to shock the world’s conscience:
A top Iraqi diplomat told world leaders that ISIS is harvesting the organs of its victims to fund it murderous operations, the latest charge of barbarity in a list that already includes mass beheadings, burning people alive, crucifying children and throwing people off of buildings.
The shocking new claim was presented by the Iraqi ambassador to the United Nations, who said bodies have turned up in mass graves bearing surgical incisions and missing organs such as kidneys. Ambassador Mohamed Alhakim leveled the charge as he asked the Security Council to investigate whether harvesting and selling the organs of those it executes. The claim followed an unconfirmed report late Tuesday that as many as 45 people captured by the Islamic State in the Anbar Province town of al-Baghdadi had been rounded up and burned alive.
“We have bodies,” Alhakim told his international counterparts. “Come and examine them. It is clear they are missing certain parts.”
Alhakim, who said a dozen doctors have been executed in Mosul for refusing to participate in organ harvesting, briefed the council on the overall situation in Iraq and accused the Islamic State group of “crimes of genocide” in targeting certain ethnic groups. The outgoing U.N. envoy to Iraq, Nikolay Mladenov, told the council that 790 people were killed in January alone by terrorism and armed conflict.
Is he arguing, among other things, that the 19 hajjis responsible had “legitimate grievances?”

This is why he his always proposing “political solutions” which include ISIS, the Taliban, or Al Qaeada. He believes they deserve a seat at the table because Obama shares their grievances and rages against the Western World.
He agrees with the terrorists. That’s why he pals around with them.

Friday 13th travellers take chance on flight 666 to HEL
Would you board flight 666 to HEL on Friday the 13th? For superstitious travellers, that might be tempting fate. But Finnair passengers on AY666 to Helsinki apparently were not too bothered. Friday’s flight was almost full.
“It has been quite a joke among the pilots,” said pilot Juha-Pekka Keidasto before flying the Airbus A320 from Copenhagen to Helsinki. “I’m not a superstitious man. It’s only a coincidence for me.”
The daily flight AY666 from Copenhagen to Helsinki falls on Friday the 13th twice in 2013.
